Why I No Longer Take Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) During Menopause

When I first entered menopause, I did what many women do—I started bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

At the time, it seemed like the obvious choice.

If my body wasn’t producing the same levels of hormones anymore, why wouldn’t I replace them?

As I continued learning through Functional Medicine and researching how hormones actually work, my perspective completely changed.

Today, I no longer take HRT.

This is my personal journey and why I decided that supporting my body naturally was the better choice for me.


🌸 I Learned That “Bio-Identical” Doesn’t Mean Natural

One of the biggest surprises for me was learning that bio-identical hormones are still manufactured hormones.

Although they are designed to closely resemble the hormones our bodies produce, they are not actually made by our bodies.

That may not matter to everyone, but it mattered to me.

Our endocrine system is incredibly intelligent. It constantly adjusts hormone production based on thousands of signals throughout the body.

Once I understood that, I began wondering:

What happens when we add hormones that our body didn’t decide to produce?


⚖️ Hormones Are All About Balance

One of the most important things my Functional Medicine doctor taught me is this:

Hormones don’t work alone.

They function as an interconnected system.

When you increase one hormone, it can influence many others.

For example, estrogen and progesterone constantly work together. Changing one affects the balance of the other, and that ripple effect can influence the entire endocrine system.

Our bodies are always trying to maintain balance (homeostasis).

The more I learned, the more I realized that I didn’t want my body constantly trying to compensate for hormones I was adding from the outside.

For me, supporting my body’s own natural balancing system simply made more sense.


🤧 The Surprising Connection Between Estrogen and Histamine

This was something I had never heard anyone talk about.

I discovered research showing that estrogen can increase histamine levels by making mast cells release more histamine while also reducing DAO, one of the body’s primary enzymes used to break histamine down.

Why does that matter?

Histamine doesn’t just affect seasonal allergies.

High histamine levels may contribute to:

🦠 Gut Health Changed Everything for Me

If you’ve followed my health journey, you already know how passionate I am about gut health.

When I was dealing with autoimmune disease, almost every path I followed eventually led back to my gut.

Healing my gut became one of the biggest turning points in restoring my health.

As I continued learning, I discovered that hormone balance and gut health are closely connected.

The gut microbiome even plays a role in processing estrogen.

When the gut isn’t healthy, estrogen metabolism may also be affected.

That was another piece of the puzzle that confirmed I wanted to focus on supporting my gut instead of adding more hormones.

💪 What I Focus on Instead of HRT

Deciding to stop Hormone Replacement Therapy didn’t mean I stopped caring about healthy aging.

Quite the opposite.

I simply shifted my focus toward helping my body function the way it was designed.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I had was realizing that menopause isn’t a disease.

It’s a natural stage of life.

Our bodies were beautifully designed to transition through it.

That doesn’t mean the transition is always easy.

But for me personally, I no longer believe every change needs to be replaced or corrected.

Instead, I want to give my body what it needs so it can adapt naturally.

This isn’t meant to tell anyone else what they should do.

Many women choose Hormone Replacement Therapy and are very happy with that decision.

This is simply why I chose to stop taking bio-identical HRT.

After everything I learned about hormone balance, estrogen, histamine, gut health, and the body’s incredible ability to regulate itself, I decided that supporting my body naturally aligned better with my long-term health goals.

I believe God designed our bodies with an incredible capacity to adapt and heal.

My job isn’t to control every hormone.

My job is to nourish my body, strengthen it, care for it, and trust the amazing design God created.
